The NFS protocol

Unix workstation can access files stored in others computer by using the nfs protocol, as others file share system, this protocol offer some advantages and a little disavantages.

All the workstation Linux in the offices and in the labs are already configured to access the share of servers automatically. all the user have to do is to indicate what share hi/he want. To access a particoular server (you have to know where the file you want is stored) just open a terminal window and insert the command: cd /net/<name of the server>/<path of the files>

where:

  • <name of the server>: All server have an IP address and a letteral name (simpler to remember for humans being). You can use the one or the latter to indicate the server
  • <path of the files>: This means the complete path needed to reach the file you want. the path start at / (the root dir in unix)

e.g.
to reach the scratch space you can use this command:

cd /net/lthcserv7/data/scratch1/<your directory>
